OK, that's nothing you to you Tuxers, but the interesting thing is that this
info was passed on to the Net-Gold list, which is a general, "sitographic"
list.

Cheers

COMPUTER: WINDOWS 95+ LINUX AND OTHER
COMPUTER OPERATING SYSTEMS:
GNU/Linux and Old Computers Can Work Together

GNU/Linux will operate old computers satisfactorily including
computers of the 486 vintage. Here are some websites that
discuss old computers and the GNU/Linux operating system.

Running Debian GNU/Linux on Old Alpha Workstations

Conclusion
The benchmark shows that the Multia is slightly more powerful
than a 486 PC - powerful enough to make a good firewall, DNS,
or DHCP server, for example. The AlphaStation 250 (shown as
AS 250 in the table) scores ahead of the Pentium PCs that were
common in 1995. Neither old Alpha workstation achieved
anywhere near the score of the Pentium III. Still, it's important to
put the value of performance into perspective:

The PC market being what it is, the new PC you pull out of a
shipping crate today will start to seem old and slow not long
after you've gotten all the Styrofoam packing material cleaned up.
Everyone has an old, slow PC. But an old, slow AlphaStation -
that's something special.

So, now that it's running Debian GNU/Linux, the old AlphaStation
250 should be fine for my purposes... at least until someone tells me
they want to get rid of a newer Alpha machine. Anyone have one of
those multi-processor GS AlphaServers they want to throw out?
Not yet? That's the upside to running old machines: sooner or later,
the machine of your dreams will come to you. It's only a matter of time.

Old Computers Give New Life to the Mudgee Youth Cafe
ComputerBank Project uses GNU/Linux to bridge the digital divide

The ComputerBank Project is an Australian initiative to supply free
Computer systems to disadvantaged groups. Volunteer
organisations exist in several Australian states.

The ComputerBank Project aims to collect older, donated computer
hardware from corporate Australia and redistribute it to people who
couldn't otherwise afford the costs associated with computing.

ComputerBank branches across Australia are now providing help
to low income individuals, families, under-resource community groups
and schools by obtaining computer hardware and training clients how
to use it. Where possible, ComputerBank try to help clients get
internet connections.

On the weekend of the 2nd and 3rd of February 2002 a group of
volunteers lead by the Project Leader Brad Thomson travelled to
Mudgee in western New South Wales. The purpose was to install
a network of computers in an 'Internet Cafe' format for a local youth
group. The entire system was configured in ComputerBank premises
at Penrith's Tri-Communities Organisation, who have kindly
provided workshop space.

The network consists of ten networked computers, a file and print
server, and a fire wall all using the GNU/Linux operating system.
GNU/Linux is supplied with computer applications such as word
processing, spreadsheets, internet browsing, email, image
manipulation and programming tools. GNU/Linux is professional
software which is completely free of license charges, thus reducing
costs for already impoverished community groups. GNU/Linux is
also supplied with CD's containing a comprehensive knowledge
database (HOW-TO's) for ongoing training. GNU/Linux is regarded
as a more than adequate substitute for familiar computer systems,
while at the same time giving users unprecedented opportunities to
learn nuts and bolts computing, should they so desire.
