I never made a PDF before, I hate PDFs, but I have to make some and don't
want to pay for the Adobe Distiller (just the name makes me laugh:
"distilling" some of the BAKOM behemoths seems a contradiction in terms).
So thank you Google, I get to www.shbox.de/freepdf.htm . It says I should
install Ghostscript first. I love gothic tales so I do. Bloody big, so I
uninstall Front Page (and MoneyMaker and Encarta while I'm at it: I never
use the b*ggers anyway; next to go, the rest of MS Office, though a copy of
MS word is handy when people produce silly forms with grey fields that won't
open correctly with OO). I try to open Ghostscript: a dash blinks as if it
wanted me to add something after GS> but I hadn't a clue what. Maybe Y?
Better not mess around.
First attempt to download FreePDF and install it. Friendly asst tells me
there's a missmatch. I trash the download. Second attempt works.
Click on the program icon. It says no files are selected but there's no menu
to select files from.
There's a handbook but it's a PDF: why the hell not in html with navigable
subtitles? In German too. What's Datei again? OK OK I work it out. Having
been forced to translate Thucydides without a Greek dictionary at high
school was zany, but a good training for exploring software, I suppose.
So I've made my first PDF. Totally pointless because I used the translation
I was working on. Now I just have to find where it has been saved on my
computer :-D
