Good afternoon!

I'm not attending PrepCom3a (or is it "bis") now in Geneva. But if some of
you are, I thought you might wish to attend the meetings announced by Georg
C.F. Greve below.

Cheers

Claude

Starting tomorrow (Tuesday) we will meet every day

Hi all,

I was just asked to draft a few lines on Limited Intellectual
Monopolies for the plenary intervention later tonight.

Here is what I came up with:

=2D--

Creativity and the will to learn and grow beyond what we are today is
an essential part of what makes us human. Through these we build our
common sea of knowledge; surrounding and connecting us all. By drawing
From=20and giving to it we communicate, build friendships and societies.

Restricting peoples access to this fundamental resource is therefore
something to be done carefully and only "To promote the progress of
science and useful arts, by securing for limited times to authors and
inventors the exclusive right to their respective writings and
discoveries;"

Over 200 years old, this last statement -- which comes from article 1
of the U.S. constitution -- is clearer, more balanced and less
ideologically charged than =A738 of the current declaration.

We propose to modify =A738 along these lines so that it will clearly
express that the benefit of society is the benchmark by which to
adjust Limited Intellectual Monopolies, such as Copyrights, Patents
and Trademarks in order to achieve the balance already referenced in
the declaration.
