Information and Communication Technologies for Development
Inveneo is a California-based, non-profit organization that creates and 
deploys "innovative technology solutions that provide remote villages 
and the NGOs that serve them access to information technology and 
essential communication capabilities." Started in 2004, it is currently 
implementing a project in rural Uganda. The project involves a solar and 
pedal powered communications system that allows local residents to make 
phone calls, send email and browse the Internet. "Inveneo has setup five 
systems. One in the Community Knowledge Center acts as the hub station, 
connecting the stations in the villages to the local phone network 
(since no landlines are available in this part of Uganda, a interconnect 
to the GSM network was established using GSM terminal units) and the 
Internet (utilizing the existing Internet connection at the Community 
Knowledge Center). All the remaining four communications stations are 
installed in villages with no access to electricity or phone lines. All 
stations are connected with 802.11 wireless network links ranging from 2 
to 6 km. distance. Inveneo's systems utilize open-source software 
(Linux, KDE, OpenOffice) for Internet access and productivity tools. The 
phone connections are established using SIP VoIP signalling protocol and 
the Asterisk open-source PBX system. Each village has it's own extension 
and voice mail box. The PBX system allows for free calls among the 
connected villages. Any phone in the world can call the stations in the 
villages and calls to any phone in Uganda are possible from the village 
stations."

As far as I understand, the technology is open source hardware - and may 
be rebuild anywhere.

I'll try to get in contact with the inveneo people ( they are from San 
Francisco) to find out about a possible cooperation and I'll ask them 
for the building instructions. It would be a great think, if we could do 
a workshop here in Switzerland to build a sample of their Solar/Pedal 
Powered ICT for demonstration and getting experiences with it to 
afterwards  implementing in in our LINUXOLA Computer Projects in Africa.

Francisco, die Infomations- und Kommunikations-Technologien entwickelt 
und verbreitet für abgelegene Dörfer in Entwicklungsländern und 
Nichtregierungsorganisationen, die dort Hilfe leisten.
Zur Zeit führen sie ein Projekt in einem Ländlichen Gebiet in Ugandas 
aus. Dabei geht es um ein Kommunikationssystem, das auf Solarenergie und 
Fahrradantrieb aufbaut und der lokalen Bevölkerung ermöglichst, zu 
telefonieren, E-Mails zu verschicken und im Internet zu surfen. Bisher 
wurden 5 Einheiten eingerichtet. Das "Zentrum für gemeinschaftliches 
Wissen" (Community Knowledge Center) dient als Ausgangspunkt, das die 
einzelnen angeschlossenen Dörfer mit dem lokalen Telefonnetz via GSM und 
dem Internet (über den bestehenden Internet-Anschluss des Zentrums) 
verbindet.
Die anderen 4 Einheiten sind in Dörfern installiert, die weder Telefon- 
noch Elektrizitätsanschluss haben. Alle werden durch 802.11 
Drahtlosverbindungen über Distanzen zwischen 2 und 6 Kilometern 
verbunden. Inveneo's System baut auf OpenSource- Software (Linux, KDE, 
Open Office) für die Computer- und den Internetnutzung. Die 
Telefonverbindungen werden hergestellt mit dem SIP VoIP Protokoll und 
Asterisk als OpenSourrce Software (PBX System). Das PBX-System 
ermöglicht Gratistelefonverbindungen zwischen den beteiligten Dörfern. 
Die Dörfer sind jedoch auch von jedem Telefonanschluss auf der Welt 
erreichbar bzw. sie können jeden Telefonanschluss auf der Welt von sich 
aus erreichen.

Soviel ich das verstehe, entwickelt Inveneo die Technologie als Open 
Source Hardware, so dass sie überall nachgebaut werden kann.

Ich werde versuchen, mit Inveneo Kontakt aufzunehmen, um mögliche Formen 
der Zusammenarbeit abzuklären und von Ihnen Bauanleitungen ihres Systems 
zu bekommen. Ich fände es super, wenn wir hier in der Schweiz einen 
Workshop veranstalten könnten, um ein solches Solar- und 
Pedalbetriebenes Kommunikationssystem zu bauen, das wir für Vorführungen 
nutzen können und um damit unsere eigenen Erfahrungen zu sammeln, mit 
dem Ziel solche Systeme anschliessend in unsere LINUXOLA-Projekte in 
Afrika integrieren zu können.
